(VIDBLOG) I Just Left - Europe 2008 from justin on Vimeo.

Recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of spending more time shooting videos. You see them everywhere now, and it is something I’ve wanted to do for some time but never quite figured out how to output my ideas. Videos like this one, as simple as they are, make me want to pick up a camera and start shooting. It’s so simple in edit, but it conveys the mood and a tone so brilliantly well. I love it. Start shooting, shoot something, stitch it together and tell a story.

A different kind of storytelling.

King Street East, Toronto

I’ve spent a lot of time recently contemplating the effectiveness of this site and its layout. Its something I personally investigate every year, and once again I feel like I am at the cross roads.

I get a wealth of requests from people who would like to see more content published on this blog/site and in general just more updates and photos from time to time. Considering that 99% of my photography business is referral based, I rarely found the need to update the blog with my random musings. Spotlight takes time, then there are various events, photography, friends….. well, life.
I’m too busy living.

This is a photography site right? No one wants to see me rant on about my various, and most often tangent sparking tirades. But yet people do. They want more pictures and more rants. So I’m starting to take the emails and comments seriously.

I polled a few to see what they thought about the current site’s layout and what they’d like to see.  Yes I still want to write and post my photos, but I want a layout and interface that’s a bit more organic. Easier to read, and inspiring for me to update.

So some changes are coming the next few months to update this site with all the web 3.0 and 4.0 and 10.whatever goodies. Yes the business side of things will come out, but I promise it will be transparent.

I’ll write as often as I can, and that’s about as much as I can promise.

If you really do want to subject yourself to my content, you know where to get the good stuff.

weekend

Talk about the roughest week. But it started off on a very high note. Caught Bedouin soundclash in a very intimate environment, and boy did they sound fantastic. Party after Party, I put myself out there, then got sick, then took a tumble, and now I feel like my head is ready to explode. Finally, a few days to relax.

75 things

75 Things every man should do, by Esquire.
This has probably been blogged to death, but anyway.

Done,

  • Play Rugby
  • Repair an appliance – washer/dryer, fridge
  • Fly the red-eye from Vegas – and once again in September.
  • Make a list of 75 things to do before you die – yes but 100.
  • Drive the PCH – I’ve done it for about 3 hours, paltry I know
  • Make a perfect omelet
  • Recognize the accomplishments of others
  • Tobaggan, aggressively
  • Scuba Dive
  • Drink mescal in Mexico
  • Cultivate a reputation
  • Learn three to four chords on guitar
  • Live in a hotel suite for a week - way too often
  • Milk a cow. Drink that
  • Help someone dig out
  • Pick an animal. Go see it in the wild
  • Shoplift
  • Throw a party
  • Live outside the homeland – most of my life
  • Start something that scares you
  • Choose a word or a phrase and actively work to never use it again
  • Cook the same thing until you are known for it
  • Overspend
  • Have a threesome
  • Quit something you love -
  • Take care of someone else’s three year old for a day – close, lots of toddlers
  • Get very good at a sport that isn’t a sport – Horsehoes, cards
  • Listen to war stories
  • Sing in Public
  • Sell everything you don’t need. Once
  • Give up your seat
  • Take a vow. Keep it
  • Live at a high altitude – short. Nuweraliya in Sri Lanka
  • Overeat for a week – why as recently as winterlicious
  • Give a panhandler all your money
  • Ride a horse
  • Walk 20 miles
  • Climb something you are afraid of – mountain, thailand
  • Get a manicure – the girlfriend made me do it
  • Get a deep-tissue massage
  • Peg the speedometer

I would love to:

  • Fly a Cessna
  • Spend some time, working for tips
  • Go to Paris. Tell no one where you are. Stay there for 2 weeks
  • Eat a six course meal that you prepared
  • Kill, dress, cook, and eat wild game
  • Do a flip off a diving board, nail it
  • Raise a dog
  • Bungee Jump
  • Eat a 2 course meal that you grew
  • Go to the Desert
  • Make beer, wine or moonshine
  • Make a movie

It’s been a while, well on the blog side anyway. Otherwise, I just can’t keep up with how busy the summer has been. Both on the Spotlight front as well as Visual Tirades. I’ve heard all your complaints, and I promise this time the updates are back for good.

Pic above is an aged treatment of a shot from a recent trip to the Brickworks abandoned facility. This one is from the roof of the mixer building.
