“You and your Indian sweets” she used to say.
I have a sweet tooth, blaming my mother and nana for that. I have short memories of walking through sweet markets in Sri Lanka, looking at vendors serve heaps of barfi, rasmalai, halva. The stuff was bought by the pound and in droves. People would crowd around even in the darkest of nights in this market, tiny lamps over the vendor huts providing the only light anyone ever needed. It was loud, boisterous and intimidating. I was scared of these vendors, and would only go close enough to peak into the pot of gulab jamun. Deep fried balls in milk syrup, there’s not more to it.
In Toronto, there is a sweet shop on Gerard that sells this stuff, but it’s expensive and the taste is not consistent. It’s also served at Indian buffets throughout the city but most of them are just meh. Welcome back. Again.
This will be the 6th incarnation of VisualTirades (2003 - )……
After a hiatus earlier this year, I thought it was time to bring back a canvas I could experiment with. I wanted somewhere to let thoughts and creativity loose. So I picked the simplest design and here we are. No distractions, no excuses now.
What to expect? There are no rules. This is visual tirades. Love it, hate it, despise it, hook on it.
Ps. I was once given flowers. But in my haste of moving a menagerie of trinkets off my living room table, I knocked over the vase and a colourful mess spotted the floor.
